'Brussels' by Karin Hedetniemi

I thought of you today, in another time and place, where we sat tucked on a balcony behind Flemish buildings, watching little brown bats. You with smiling eyes, cigar smoke tendrils lifting to the sky. Oh, how we talked for hours, having travelled halfway around the world to be nowhere but home, on a deck, waiting for the stars to come out. Lately, I wake at night and my mind fills with questions, silent mysteries: How did I get here? From that life then, to this one now? To travel forward so many years and find myself, again, nowhere but home.
