Turkish Grandma hates my doll. American Grandma gave me the doll, which looks like me, and used to be Mommy’s—reasons number one, two, and three why Turkish Grandma hates it. Mommy locks my doll away when Turkish Grandma visits—otherwise she’ll hide it in the garage or in the basement before sneaking it into the trash one night. Mommy says don’t be mad; says Turkish Grandma was changing siblings’ diapers and picking cotton at my age; says Turkish Grandma’s sad she had no doll of her own to pass down to me. And sometimes, sad and angry look the same.
