'My Miracle Boy' by Sandy Krausnick

The fortune tells me that I will have a baby boy, and when you are born, I will believe you are a miracle, conceived of love and indifference. I will adore your tiny fingers and toes, and even after colicky nights and cracked nipples, I will love you. When you are five, you will hold up your little fists to fight like your dad, and friends will find you adorable. At 10, you will be sent home from school for disrespecting your teacher. Your father will shift his belt and teach you about respect. The fortune says that he will give up on us and move to another town before your 11th birthday. At 13, you will be smoking pot and selling it at 15.  At 16, you will drop out of school to be in a band. When you move out with friends and need money, I will give it to you. When you need a phone and can’t afford it, I will pay for it. When you find a girlfriend who only eats organic, I will stock your fridge. At 28, I will give you access to my bank account for the extra bit you need each month. At 32, you will still be dreaming of being in a heavy metal band. The fortune says when you are 34, I will get sick and retire and need help. You’ll get frustrated with me and explain that you have commitments. I will understand. You are doing your best.

Sandy Krausnick lives in Alberta, near the Canadian Rocky Mountains, with her wife and their rescue dog, Holly. Her writing has appeared in FreeFall Magazine, Flash Boulevard, Cosmic Daffodil and World Insane.
