'Family' by Chandrika R Krishnan

The ghee took the raw smell of the gram flour in its stride. She waited for the crunchiness of the sugar to melt into a softer version. Watching the creaminess of milk blend with the grated coconut, she continued unperturbed to the banging doors, the screams. A thump followed the calling out of names. More expletives, then blessed silence. She watched the heavenly mass do a provocative dance around the pan as she turned the ladle. As she checked the consistency, she heard a laugh, their disagreement a thing of the past as the boisterous twins trooped in whiffing appreciatively and said in unison, “What’s cooking?”

The truce would last...well until the next disagreement.
