If it had not been Baisakhi that day. If she had not gone to pray at the Golden Temple that morning. If she had not ignored the whispers lacing the spring breeze and bypassed the Bagh. If she had not lost her grip on his arm at that moment. If she had not jumped into the well when the shots rang out. If she had not been crushed by those who fell in after her.
She could have survived.
Instead, she left her son, my father, repeating until his last breath – what if?
