'Yesterday' by Lori Cramer
Yesterday, after the ballgame, Preston said we’d be better off apart. When I agreed, he acted surprised—insulted, almost. I pointed out how little we had in common, but he argued that opposites attract. Saying we’d stay friends seemed cliché, so, instead, I told him I’d always treasure our memories. His eyes got watery and his voice sounded shaky as he begged me not to leave him. I assured him that he’d be fine without me and reminded him that breaking up had been his idea, but he dissolved into tears. Here’s hoping this breakup thing goes better today.
