'Friends' by John Holland

Possibly life-long friends. You are clever. Funny. Sardonic. I admire you.
Despite, or even because of, everything, she says.

Because we don’t care about that now. Do we? The misplaced feelings. The bit of friction. What does that matter? she says.

So are we engaged now? he says. Engaged to be friends? Shall I get the ring? Just paper, is it? For friends? Or cardboard, maybe? Kitchen foil?

Wary, she laughs.

From a friendly distance.
