First, we learned to grow things. To nurture, to care. Fill the paper cup with dirt, poke a pencil in the middle, drop the seed in the hole. Cover with soil, add water. We learned to watch, to wait our turn, to treasure life.

Mary Callahan was recently awarded an Individual Artist Grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council for her memoir-in-progress, and has taught writing at Rhode Island College and the Naval Academy Preparatory School. Her creative nonfiction has been published in Bright Flash Literary Review, Gravel, and Foliate Oak.
