'The Captain's Final Flight' by Tania Hershman

“Bright?” said the Captain.

“Yes?” said Bright.

“Are we...?” said the Captain.

“Northern-most quadrant,” said Bright.

“Fine,” said the Captain, adjusting her straps. “Take us in.”

Bright monitored the landing while the Captain communicated their desires. The accepting party accepted, and they came through. The Captain took Bright's arm. “Bright,” she whispered as the lights all shone at once.

After they had proved their names, Bright and the Captain were taken to Waiting, told it would be 9567.3 moments' hold. Bright sat the Captain down, arranged her hands in correct formation.

“I don't know,” mumbled the Captain.

“I know,” said Bright, and they sat, arm by arm, as the moments travelled through. The Captain turned her head as others passed. Bright stared straight, but from an angle watched the Captain.

The Captain sighed. Bright moved a centimetre closer.

When the holding time was done, they were moved to Interim, reminded there would be no slow or fast, to bide in patience.

“I'm so glad you're...,” the Captain whispered. Bright moved another centimetre closer, and in the Interim they sat and waited for the moment to arrive.
