About

Flash Flood is National Flash Fiction Day's curated online flash fiction journal.

General Submissions

We open for submissions for one week a year.  During that week, we receive over 1,000 stories and select our favourites for publication on National Flash Fiction Day.  On that day, we post a flood of flash, with a new story appearing every five-to ten minutes for a 24-hour flash extravaganza.

  • This year's Flash Flood will take place on Saturday, 26 June 2021.  The first flash will post at 00:01 BST and we'll wrap up at 23:59 BST.
  • Submissions for the 2021 Flash Flood will open at 00:01 BST on Sunday, 2 May and will close at 23:59 BST on Sunday, 8 May.  Check our Submission Guidelines page for full details.

Community Focus

In 2019, we published our first community flash series, and would love to hear about other flash projects in different communities.  If you have a flash fiction project that might fit into our flash fiction celebrations in 2020, we'd love to hear from you; drop us an e-mail us at nationalflashfictionday@gmail.com and tell us all about it.
  • On Sunday, 7 June 2020 we published a mini Flood with a focus on the Green Stories project.
  • On Sunday, 16 June 2019, we published a mini Flood of flash written on the theme of 'epiphany' by men at HMP Wandsworth who were participants of Safe Ground's Flash Fiction Project workshops.

Volunteering

If you have some time in the spring and would like to volunteer to help with the Flood, we'd love to hear from you.   E-mail us at
and let us know a bit about yourself, your interests, and your availability in 2021.

Happy writing and happy reading from all of us at Flash Flood!
