'The Cat Ate the Strudel' by Zoé Mahfouz

6pm Sunday, I begged for the free unsold eight inch chocolate cake at the bakery downstairs for leverage. The PhD professor finally ushered me in. He hugged me. He had a rosy, bovine-eyed guest who spoke German. He hugged me. The Japanese teabag holders were flat black cats. Mine was angry. The professor's was thoughtful. The German guest's was zany. I pitched a haiku screenplay thesis. The rosy guest captured the professor's hand, silently squeezing his veins. The antique clock struck. I said candor was priceless. The professor said he was fourteen. Waiting on tenterhooks for a PhD recommendation letter.
